Baptism, or Christening as it is sometimes called, is the way in which we through this sacrament, belong to Jesus and become part of the Christian family the church. As such it is a very significant event in the life of anyone, whether a baby, a child or an adult At the Baptism Service, promises and declarations are made by those being baptised, or by their Parents and Godparents on their behalf.
We welcome anyone living in the Parish, or on the electoral roll, who presents themselves or their children for Baptism. If you live outside of our parish but have a connection with St Andrew’s through Poppets, or your family, you may need to ask permission from the Vicar of the parish you live in. Where babies or children are presented for Baptism, the parents will be required to come along twice to our 9.30am Sunday service with Children’s Ministry. Following this a visit will be arranged and parents and Godparents will be asked to attend a Baptism preparation meeting. Godparents must be baptised.
For young people and adults, the normal practice is to attend a series of classes prior to Baptism, or leading up to Confirmation. These courses are usually run on an annual basis.
It is important to know the family of faith of St Andrew’s to which you are asking to belong, we are here to help you in your faith journey and to pray for you. You will find the church friendly and welcoming. The Baptism Service is normally held on a Sunday afternoon, dates and time to be arranged during the visit. You and your family will be invited to attend our annual Christingle Service to re-light your baptism candle and pray for you. There are no fees payable for Baptism.
